Clark County, Washington is one of the fastest-growing regions in the Pacific Northwest, and for good reason. Families are drawn here for the quality of life, the natural beauty, the proximity to Portland, and above all, the schools. Whether you are moving from Oregon to take advantage of Washington's tax benefits, relocating from out of state, or upgrading to a community with stronger schools, the school district you choose will shape your family's experience and your home's long-term value. As a native Oregonian with 20 years of licensed experience serving Portland Metro and SW Washington, I have helped hundreds of families navigate this decision. Let me walk you through what each district in Clark County offers so you can find the right fit for your family.

In this guide:

  • 1. Vancouver Public Schools
  • 2. Evergreen Public Schools
  • 3. Camas School District
  • 4. Battle Ground Public Schools
  • 5. Ridgefield School District
  • 6. Washougal School District
  • 7. Schools and Home Values

1. Vancouver Public Schools

Vancouver Public Schools is the largest district in Southwest Washington, serving more than 23,000 students across the City of Vancouver and its surrounding urban areas. The district operates over 30 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and six comprehensive high schools, plus specialty programs including Vancouver iTech Preparatory and the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (VANSA).

VPS is known for its strong STEM programs, career and technical education pathways, and community college partnerships through Washington State University Vancouver and Clark College. The district also offers a growing number of dual-language programs and has invested heavily in modernizing older school facilities. Hudson's Bay High School, Skyview High School, and Columbia River High School are among the most recognized schools in the district. For families who want urban convenience with strong educational options, Vancouver Public Schools delivers a wide range of choices.

Home values in Vancouver vary widely by neighborhood, but proximity to top-rated VPS elementary schools is a strong factor in resale value. Areas near Fisher's Landing, the Vancouver Waterfront, and the Felida neighborhood are especially popular with families.

2. Evergreen Public Schools

Evergreen Public Schools is the second-largest district in Clark County, serving over 25,000 students across east Vancouver and the unincorporated areas of Clark County. The district includes neighborhoods like Cascade Park, Orchards, Mill Plain, and the Sifton area. Evergreen operates more than 20 elementary schools, six middle schools, and five high schools, including the well-regarded Union High School and Evergreen High School.

What sets Evergreen apart is its strong commitment to career and technical education. The district's specialized programs include the Center for Agriculture, Science, and Environmental Education (CASEE), the Health Careers Academy, and the Engineering and Design Academy. These programs give students real-world experience and college credit while still in high school. Evergreen also offers a robust Advanced Placement program and has been recognized for its music and performing arts programs.

For families, Evergreen offers an excellent balance of suburban comfort and educational opportunity. The district serves some of Clark County's most desirable family neighborhoods, with homes that offer more space for the money than closer-in Vancouver areas.

3. Camas School District

The Camas School District is widely regarded as one of the top districts in Washington State. Serving about 7,200 students in one of Clark County's most desirable communities, Camas schools consistently earn top academic ratings. The district's elementary schools, including Prune Hill, Grass Valley, and Woodburn, are recognized for strong foundations in literacy and math. Camas High School and Hayes Freedom High School offer rigorous academics, award-winning music and arts programs, and competitive athletics.

The district's focus on small class sizes, innovative teaching methods, and strong community involvement draws families from across the region. For buyers moving from Oregon to SW Washington, the quality of Camas schools is often the single most important factor in their decision. Homes in the Camas School District command a premium, but many families find the investment well worth it for the educational outcomes.

I have written a full community spotlight on living in Camas that covers the city's charming downtown, parks, neighborhoods, and commute patterns in greater detail.

4. Battle Ground Public Schools

Battle Ground Public Schools serves over 14,000 students and is one of Clark County's largest and most respected districts. Located about 30 minutes north of Vancouver, Battle Ground has grown rapidly while maintaining its small-town community feel. The district includes strong elementary schools like Captain Strong Primary, Glenn Love Elementary, and Maple Grove. Battle Ground High School offers a wide range of Advanced Placement courses, career and technical education pathways, and competitive athletics. Prairie High School, located just south of town, is another strong option known for its academic and extracurricular programs.

The Battle Ground district is known for engaged teachers, involved parents, and a commitment to student success across all grade levels. For families moving to SW Washington who want more space for their housing dollar, Battle Ground offers an excellent combination of affordability and strong schools. Newer subdivisions in the district provide modern homes with family-friendly floor plans, while older neighborhoods offer larger lots and established trees.

I cover Battle Ground in more depth in my Battle Ground community spotlight, which includes information on neighborhoods, parks, and commuting.

5. Ridgefield School District

Ridgefield School District is one of Clark County's fastest-growing districts, and for good reason. Located just north of Vancouver, Ridgefield has become a magnet for families seeking newer homes, strong schools, and a growing community with small-town charm. The district serves approximately 4,000 students across Ridgefield Elementary, Sunset Ridge Intermediate, View Ridge Middle School, and Ridgefield High School.

Ridgefield High School opened a state-of-the-art campus in recent years and has earned recognition for its strong academic programs, performing arts, and athletics. The district's small size allows for a more personalized educational experience, with strong community support and high parent involvement. Ridgefield is particularly popular with first-time homebuyers and growing families who want newer construction homes at more accessible price points than closer-in suburbs.

The city's charming downtown has seen a revival with new restaurants and shops, and the easy commute to Vancouver and Portland makes Ridgefield a smart choice for families who want a growing community with a bright future.

6. Washougal School District

Washougal School District serves about 3,500 students in the scenic community east of Vancouver along the Columbia River. Washougal offers a more relaxed, nature-oriented lifestyle while still providing convenient access to Camas, Vancouver, and Portland. The district includes Hathaway Elementary, Cape Horn-Skye Elementary, Jemtegaard Middle School, and Washougal High School.

Washougal High School has earned a reputation for strong academics, competitive athletics, and a supportive learning environment. The district has invested in facility upgrades and expanded programs in STEM, career and technical education, and the arts. Washougal's location along the Columbia River Gorge means students and families have unparalleled access to outdoor recreation, including hiking, windsurfing, kayaking, and biking, right in their backyard.

For families who want a quieter, more nature-connected lifestyle without sacrificing educational quality, Washougal is an appealing option. Home prices are generally more affordable than neighboring Camas, offering better value for buyers willing to be a few minutes farther east.

7. Schools and Home Values

School district boundaries are one of the most important factors in home values across Clark County. Homes in highly rated districts like Camas command a premium, while up-and-coming districts like Ridgefield and Washougal offer strong appreciation potential as their schools continue to earn recognition. Evergreen and Vancouver Public Schools offer a wide range of options across different price points, giving buyers flexibility depending on budget and priorities. Battle Ground delivers excellent value for families who want space and strong schools without paying the premium of closer-in suburbs.

When you work with me, I make sure you know exactly which schools serve each property we look at, including feeder patterns from elementary to middle to high school.
